Though still employing a largely abstract language, many of these paintings openly acknowledge a long held interest in estuaries and shorelines that has been echoing through my work for some time. In particular, the paintings explore the shifting delineations of air, water and land and transient systems such as weather, erosion, tides and the detritus of tidelines and the various ways such physicality and transience can be apprehended through the qualities of a painting’s surface. Some paintings have a darker, more brooding mood that is a direct outcome of a residency at Cill Rialaig on the wild Kerry coast of south-west Ireland. Other works reflect the quieter, muddier Thames Estuary and North Kent coastline.
